How to Switch Instagram to a Business Account and Connect It to Meta

Switch your Instagram to a Business account, connect it to your Facebook Page and business portfolio, and give the team access.

To run Instagram ads and see full performance data, your Instagram needs to be a Business account connected to your Meta business portfolio. This guide walks you through the switch in the app, connecting it to your Facebook Page, and assigning our team admin access

Onboarding Guide: Instagram Business Login

Before you start

This guide makes sure your Instagram is a Business account, connects it to your Facebook Page, and gives us access.

You will need:

  • Your Instagram username and password.

  • Your phone, with the Instagram app installed (for the security code and Step 1).

  • The Meta Business Setup guide completed first, so your business portfolio exists.

Tip: Your Instagram account must be public to become a Business account. Check this in the app: Profile → menu (three lines, top-right) → Account privacy → make sure Private account is off.

Step 1: Switch Instagram to a Business account

First, check if it's already a Business account:

  1. Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture (bottom-right).

  2. Tap the menu (three lines, top-right).

  3. Scroll to For professionals. If you see Business tools and controls, you're already set. Skip to Step 2.

If you see Account type and tools instead:

  1. Tap Account type and tools.

  2. Tap Switch to professional account, then tap Continue through the intro screens.

  3. Pick the category that best describes your business (for example "Clothing Store"). Tap Done.

  4. When asked, choose Business (not Creator). Tap Next.

  5. Review or add your business email, phone, and address. Tap Next. You can choose not to show these publicly.

  6. If asked to connect to Facebook, you can do it now or skip; Step 2 covers it.

On a computer instead? Go to instagram.com → More → Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account → Business.

Step 2: Connect Instagram to your business portfolio

This puts your Instagram in the same place as your Facebook Page, so ads and posts can run on both.

  1. On a computer, go to Business Settings.

  2. In the left menu, click Accounts → Instagram accounts.

  3. Click the blue + Add button (or Connect your Instagram account).

  4. A pop-up opens. Log in with your Instagram username and password.

    • If Instagram sends a security code to your phone or email, enter it.

  5. Click Connect or Confirm to finish.

  6. Now link it to your Facebook Page: go to Meta Business Suite → Settings (gear, bottom-left) → Business assets or Linked accounts → select your Page → Instagram → Connect account, and follow the prompts.

Done when: your Instagram username appears under Accounts → Instagram accounts in Business Settings.

Step 3: Share access with us

Option A: add our team as admins (preferred, no password needed)

  1. Go to Business Settings → Accounts → Instagram accounts.

  2. Click your Instagram account.

  3. Click Assign people (or Add people).

  4. Select OPTYO’s team (you invited them in the Meta Business Setup guide).

  5. Turn on Full control (Meta's admin level) for each one.

  6. Click Assign (or Save changes).

Option B: share your login (only if we ask for it)

Some tasks, like certain Instagram features only in the app, need a direct login.

  1. Send your username and password through a secure method, like a password manager share link or a phone call. Never by plain email or text.

  2. If you have two-factor authentication (login codes) on, be ready to send us the code when we first log in, or we'll schedule a time to do it together.

  3. When Instagram asks "Was this you?" about a new login from our location, tap This was me.

Final checklist and troubleshooting

  • Instagram account is public

  • Instagram switched to a Business account

  • Instagram connected to your business portfolio and Facebook Page

  • Instagram assigned to OPTYO

Common problems:

  • I can't find Account type and tools: update the Instagram app from the App Store or Google Play, then try again.

  • "This account is already connected to another business": a past agency may own it. Message us and we'll help you get it back.

  • I'm locked out or lost my password: use Forgot password? on the Instagram login screen, or visit Instagram Help.

  • Stuck anywhere else: screenshot the screen and send it to us.
